Brian Dawkins, one of the best safeties in the league and most beloved players in Philadelphia history, retired Monday after 16 seasons in the NFL.
This future hall-of-famer was the epitome of what Philadelphia fans respect most: skill, leadership and hard work. The effort and intensity was constantly on display; he took no plays off and left it all on the field.
To this day, Dawkins’ #20 jersey remains one of the most recognized and widely seen Eagles jerseys at games and around the Philly area. His number will no doubt be retired by the Eagles sometime in the near future.
Dawkins’ leaving the Eagles in 2009 to sign with the Denver Broncos was one of the most second-guessed decisions in Philly history. His absence in the secondary and in the locker room can still be felt.
Here’s to a great man, a Philly legend, and my favorite player ever.
Career highlights:
9x Pro Bowl selection (1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011)
6x All-Pro (1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009)
NFC Champion (2004)
First player in NFL history to record a sack, an interception, a forced fumble, and a touchdown reception in a single game.

NFL 2000s All-Decade Team
